To have a license plate in Massachusetts, the car, truck, motorcycle or van has to have Massachusetts Automobile Insurance. To repair your vehicle in case of an accident you need to purchase physical damage coverage, or Collision and Comprehensive coverage. To protect you, the owner of the car, and the driver in case of injuries caused to others in that accident you need to purchase Liability Coverage. To provide for medical coverage for yourself, the driver and any other passengers in the car you need to purchase Personal Injury Protection and or Medical Payments.

Massachusetts Automobile policies provide 12 different coverages. Four of the coverages are state mandated just to have a license plate. Eleven of those coverages have different combinations of coverage that can be purchased. There are five, or more, different discounts that can be applied.  The cost of an auto policy is determined several ways, these include: 1) the length of time you have been driving and the number of safety violations or accidents you were involved in, 2) where you live, 3) what type of car you drive, and 4) discounts that can be applied.  Massachusetts Insurance rates are set by the state, but they can still differ from company to company. Massachusetts rates are also very expensive compared to most other states.
